It is believed that Larimar was formed by hot mineral-rich fluid being forced into crevices and cracks formed by tectonic activity. As the mineral-rich fluid-cooled within the cavities, small crystalline nuclides called spherulites formed. As the liquid further cooled, the spherulites mixed and eventually merged into a gel which ultimately hardened into Larimar. Its blue colouration, which can range from pale to deep blue, is caused by the presence of copper in the stone.
